Lucerne City Guide

Ever wanted to visit a cute European village like those you see in pictures plastered all over social media? I discovered the perfect place in the heart of Switzerland. I was there in winter but I’ve seen pictures of this place in summer and it looks just as beautiful.

Let me introduce you to Lucerne.

Lucerne is located in Switzerland, smack bang in the middle of the country. The town is sort of hidden away because it’s not one of the first places you hear of when you’re looking at travelling to Switzerland. Don’t get me wrong, the whole country is absolutely stunning, but Lucerne just has it all!

Getting around

The trams are the easiest way to get around Lucerne. Alternatively you can walk. Everything is located pretty close together so you won’t have to worry too much about trying to buy tickets for buses or trams if you don’t want the hassle.

Sightseeing

When in Switzerland, do as the Swiss do and admire Mt Pilatus. The mountain is one of the tallest in the Swiss Alps so it’s only fitting that you make your way to the top. Stand above the clouds in freezing temperatures and look at to the rest of Europe. Just be careful, it can get pretty slippery up here!

The chapel bridge is the oldest standing bridge in all of Europe and yes you can walk across it. Unfortunately parts of the bridge were burnt down in the past and rebuilt to look the same and more unfortunate is that tourists seem to think it’s fair to leave their mark on the bridge.

The lion monument is a great spot to learn about the history of the little town and spot some free artwork!

Shopping

Chocolate, chocolate, oh, and more chocolate! Do not miss your opportunity to get your hands on some of the best Swiss chocolate! There are plenty of cafes and chocolate shops around town to pick up some treats.

Don’t forget to grab yourself a genuine Swiss watch and a Swiss army knife. I certainly did!

Cheese fondue is a staple in Switzerland and you’ll find it at plenty of restaurants in Lucerne. Much like chocolate fondue, you dip bread into a pot of melted cheese. Don’t be fooled though! This isn’t just melted cheddar, this is seven or more types of cheese mixed together.

Lucerne is a beautiful town in Switzerland and your trip to the country isn’t complete without it. If you’re looking for a hotel, don’t forget to check out my review of Hotel Central Kriens!

What’s your favourite Swiss town?
