Great for children
When we told people we’d be visiting Japan, a few recommend we visit Sanrio Puroland. The theme park is located in Tama which is about 40 minutes by train from the centre of Tokyo. You’ll have to buy a separate train ticket to get to Tama as well.
Tama has a theme-park vibe as soon as you step off the train with paved pathways and cartoon-like shops and restaurants lining the streets to the theme park. The theme park is housed inside a castle-like building so it’s hard to miss.
The park is quite expensive to enter at 3,300 yen per adult (or roughly $40AUD). Inside there’s a cafeteria-like restaurant, vending machines and stores and more. There’s only one ride in the park and that’s a boat ride in which a boat that travels around the park and through different hello kitty worlds. The highlight for the children visiting the park was the parade and show.
There’s also an arcade on the top floor and a large gift store which is great if you’re into Hello Kitty and subsequent cartoon characters.
The theme park is tiny and you can walk around the entire thing in about 15 minutes. The best thing about the park for me was its location. We got to see another side to Tokyo and catch the train with locals on their way to school and work.
If you want to visit a theme park while you’re in Japan, head to Disneyland or Universal Studios instead.

[…] I highly recommend spending a day at Tokyo Disneyland. David and I had so much fun there. If you’d rather visit a more localised theme park, visit Sanrio Puroland. […]
